With a near infinite amount of Lego design possibilities out there, it’s no surprise that art has become a focus for the design team. Thanks to the use of stubs and small tiles, some of the world's most famous designs have been brought to life with the help of Lego.
In this Top 5 list, I’ll be taking a look at some of my favourite Mosaic sets that are available at the moment. We’ll look at how the tiles are used and how accurate the design is in comparison to the real thing.
So, without further ado, let’s get started!
The Rolling Stones
Set number: 31206
Pieces: 1998
To start with, we’re on the music scene with the one and only Rolling Stones Lips. Having been the most recognisable icon for the Rolling Stones for over 60 years, it’s only right to see it immortalized in Lego. And how amazing does it look?
The bright red tiles paired with white and black pieces make for an eye catching combination and with 9 base plates, you can turn it into an incredible wall display to show off in your home. And while you do so, why not add some music? To pay tribute to the band’s 60th anniversary, the set includes a QR code, that when scanned, unlocks an hour's worth of audio content to listen to.
Not only is this a tribute worthy of the name, but I love the variety of design options that are included in this set. You can either have the traditional design, or change it up with a distinctive ‘60’ between the lip outline. Either way, you can rest assured that you’re paying tribute to the Rolling Stones in style!
Floral Art
Set number: 31207
Pieces: 2870
With what I can only describe as an adult Lego Dots set, this Floral Art kit really steps up the standards of what’s possible with small lego pieces.
Not only is this kit packed with enough pieces to create three different flower designs, but the number of colour possibilities are nearly endless! Simple use the different coloured pieces to create striking alternatives to the box art and have your own one of a kind floral display!
As a huge fan of the flower kits, I couldn’t resist getting my hands on this kit, and I wasn’t disappointed. It looks truly stunning on my bedroom wall, and I love being able to change the design each month to have a different flower in the frame. This really makes for a unique set.
Lego Mosaic Maker
Set number: 40179
Pieces: 4702
Now, this set really takes mosaic making with Lego to a whole new level. With nearly 5000 individual pieces, the design possibilities are nearly endless, and what’s more, you can even bring yourself to life on the baseplates!
Using the state of the art Mosaic Maker feature on the Lego site, you transform any picture into a Lego work of art and bring it to life with your very own pieces. You can do this as many times as you like, and can even add other colours into the design if you want to mix it up.
Jim Lee Batman Collection
Set number: 31205
Pieces: 4167
As a huge DC universe fan, this is definitely one of my favourite kits on this list. Jim Lee is one of the most well known comic book artists and currently sits as the President of DC comics. So what better way to pay tribute to this legend than to immortalize some of his most well known designs in Lego.
This kit comes with three potential designs to build on the base plates provided. These include Batman, The Joker and Harley Quinn. Each of which can be created using the plethora of strikingly bright Lego stubbs that are provided. But that’s not even the final form for this kit…
Combine two of these sets and you can create two ultimate designs that would look perfect in any DC fans home. These designs include a long body shot of Batman Himself or a striking landscape shot of Batman and Wonder Woman together with Gotham City behind them.
Hosukai - The Great Wave
Set number: 31208
Pieces: 1810
Finally, we have a true work of art; quite literally! The Great Wave is easily one of the most recognised pieces of art and can be found on plats, phone cases and bedsheets. So why not Lego?
This kit includes 6 canvas plates, 2 hanging elements, and a decorative tile with the artists signature on it. All which, when combined, enables you to have this distinctive art piece in your very own home gallery. But that’s not all. Thanks to the 3D potential of Lego, the waves actually protrude out of the canvas to give a textured effect that you can run your hands over. Magical!
So there we have it! Five incredible art themed sets that not only bring the artistic world to the Lego realm, but also to your tabletop. Now all that’s left is for you to let us know if you agree with these Mosaic sets? Is there one I missed or did I pick your favourite? You can let us know by using the @zatugames tag on any social media platform.
Until next time, keep building!
