Do you love word games? Do you love pizza? If you answered yes to both of these, then Big Potato Games has you covered!

P for Pizza is a simple, fun, fast-paced word game that will have you shouting over your friends and family in a desperate scramble to get the most slices and be crowned the pizza king!

The double sided cards have all you need to play P for Pizza. The triangle cards have a letter on each edge on one side and on the other side, there are letters on each edge. Turn one card over the category side and then 3 cards on each edge on the letter side and you’re ready to go! All you need to do is be the first to shout out a word that matches the category and starts with the letter displayed.

Cards are built into a pyramid and the categories get harder the further up you go. The race is on to finish off your pizza pyramid. Will you beat the competition to be crowned the pizza king?

Player count - 2-4 players

Time - 20 minutes

Age - 8+

Big Potato Games have really perfected the family-friendly, quick-to-play game! With games such as Don’t Get Got, Obama Llama and Blockbuster, they really seem to be smashing it out the park with their releases! P for Pizza seems to fit the bill once again and the theme certainly does it for me! Who doesn’t love pizza!?! Does P for Pizza get you salivating and wanting more or does it feel like dodgy cold pizza in the morning? Let’s find out!

Set-up P for Pizza

P for Pizza is a quick-fire word game which has you on your toes throughout the game. The premise is simple! You grab a stack of the affectionately designed pizza slice cards and pop them in the centre of the table with the categories facing up. Each card has three categories on it, green, amber and red, with each colour dictating the difficulty and also where you can place them on your pizza slice as you construct it (more on this later). You then need to take three more cards, flip them over to the letter side and place one next to each category. This means you have a letter associated with each category and then you are ready to play. It really is that easy! P for Pizza is now all set up and ready to play!

How to Play

As soon as the third card is laid down, players must race to say out loud a word that matches the pair of category and letter. For example, if the category was “Board Game stores” and the letter was “Z”, one would naturally shout out “ZATU”! The first player to shout out an answer that correctly matches both elements will take the letter card and place it in front of them. This leads us to how you win the game. You need to collect 9 cards in total however you arrange them in the shape of a pizza slice with three levels. The first level has 5 cards that need to be place, the second level has 3 cards and the final level needs just one card.

Seems easy enough but that’s where the category colours come in. Green category cards that you win can only be placed on the lowest level. Yellow categories can go on either the bottom or middle levels, and yes, you guessed it, the red categories can go anywhere. With that in mind, this means that when you are on the final and top level, only red categories count! This extra element creates a little more tensions and really challenges you towards the end of the game. Play continues until one person completes their pizza slice and they will be declared the winner and the “Pizza King”! That’s how you play but does it fulfil my hunger for word games?

My thoughts

I have to say, I really enjoyed playing P for Pizza! Word games are a favourite of mine and this one is a nice, easy filler game and one that anyone can play and understand really quickly. I also tend to judge games by whether my family enjoy them as they certainly aren’t gamers and prefer the simple games such as 6 Nimmt. Needless to say, they loved this! They understood how to play in about 20 seconds (genuinely, this game is so easy to understand) and after our first game, we playing again and again, mainly because my mother was determined to win (she did, eventually).

P for Pizza hits a real sweet spot for me, as P for Pizza is a game that’s easy to learn and play, quick-fire and tense, and provides a good level of replayability. While there may be a limit to the categories due to the cards, the combinations with all the letters makes this game very replayable!

Yet again, Big Potato Games have a produced a game that will certainly keep everyone entertained, no matter the setting. It’s super lightweight meaning anyone can play it and I’ve certainly found it to be massively competitive as well. I’m a big fan of word games and this one has certainly worked its way up to one of my favourites. Simple to play and damn good fun combine to make this a hit!
